ESA Assessments

My Approach

When I conduct an emotional support animal (ESA) assessment, I approach it with the same care and attention I bring to all of my work. More than a form, an ESA assessment is a chance to reflect on your mental health needs, and explore whether and emotional support animal could be a meaningful part of your care.

California law requires a therapist-client relationship for at least 30 days, so I offer a minimum of four 60-minutes session to meet this requirement.

During our sessions, we’ll discuss your history, symptoms, and experiences. I’ll guide you through the process with transparency and care. At the end, we’ll talk through your options—and if an ESA is appropriate, I’ll provide ethical, compliant documentation to help you access that support.

Whatever the outcome, you’ll leave with clarity, confidence, and next steps.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Emotional Support Animal (ESA)?

An ESA is a pet that provides comfort and emotional support just by being with you. They’re there to help you cope with things like anxiety, depression, PTSD, or other emotional or mental health challenges.

Is an ESA the same as a service animal?

No. Service animals are trained to perform specific tasks for someone with a disability. ESAs offer emotional comfort but aren’t trained to do specific jobs.

Why do I need a session to get an ESA letter?

A licensed therapist needs to understand your situation before writing a letter. It’s how we make sure the support is legitimate and tailored to you.

Can I get a letter online without an assessment?

Be careful! Quick online letters can get rejected. Legitimate ESA letters must come from a licensed mental health professional who has assessed you and can ethically support your need for one.

Will my landlord accept the letter?

Under the Fair Housing Act, landlords usually must allow ESAs with proper documentation. Your letter will provide the verification needed, if asked.

Are there special ESA rules in California?

Yes. California requires a 30-day client relationship before writing an ESA letter, plus specific documentation to keep things ethical and legal.

What if I don’t live in California?

I can only provide ESA letters for California residents. If you’re in another state, you’ll need to connect with a therapist licensed where you live.
